Noël Carroll (född 1947) är en amerikansk filosof som anses vara en av de ledande personerna inom samtida konstfilosofi . Även om Carroll är mest känd för sitt arbete inom filmfilosofi (han är en förespråkare för kognitiv filmteori ), har han också publicerat journalistik, arbetar med konstfilosofi i allmänhet, teori om media och även historiefilosofi . Från och med 2012 är han en framstående professor i filosofi vid CUNY Graduate Center .

Karriär

Carroll har doktorsexamen i både filmstudier och filosofi. Från 1972-1988 arbetade han som journalist för film, teater, performance och konst för publikationer som Chicago Reader , Artforum , In These Times , Dance Magazine , SoHo Weekly News och The Village Voice . Många av dessa tidiga artiklar har samlats i hans 2011 bok Living in an Artworld . Han har också skrivit fem dokumentärer.

Hans kanske mest populära och inflytelserika bok är The Philosophy of Horror, eller, Paradoxes of the Heart (1990), en undersökning av skräckfiktionens estetik (i romaner, berättelser, radio och film). Som nämnts i bokens introduktion skrev Carroll delvis Paradoxes of the Heart för att övertyga sina föräldrar om att hans livslånga fascination av skräckfiktion inte var slöseri med tid. En annan viktig bok av Carroll är Mystifying Movies (1988), en kritik av psykoanalytikern Jacques Lacans idéer , den marxistiska filosofen Louis Althusser och Roland Barthes semiotik , som har blivit krediterad för att ha inspirerat ett skifte från vad Carroll beskriver som "Psycho -Semiotisk marxism "som hade dominerat filmstudier och filmteori vid amerikanska universitet sedan 1970 -talet.

Carroll mottog ett Guggenheim -stipendium 2002 för sin forskning inom dansfilosofi.

Han utsågs till sjätte mest inflytelserika konstfilosof sedan 1945 av Philosophical Gourmet Report .
